George Elmer Knode, 84, of LeRoy, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, on his birthday at the Wildwood Grove Care Facility where he had resided since June of 2012.

He was born Jan.16, 1930, in Oakdale Township, Howard County, Iowa the fourth son of Alva and Freda (Prentis) Knode. George farmed with his family and completed the eighth-grade, later earning his GED through LeRoy-Ostrander High School. He participated in Boy Scouts and Golden Glove Boxing.

On Oct. 8, 1950, George married Marian (June) Erie and raised four children while operating a dairy farm with his brother Glen in rural LeRoy. He was a 4-H leader, a passionate NFO member, and faithful blood donor. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Later after June’s death, George married Shirley Spencer Nagele on Sept. 10, 2004, living on East Henry Street in in LeRoy until his move to Wildwood.

George is survived by his wife, Shirley of LeRoy, sister Marie (Royjohn) Duffey, Mesa , Ariz.; children: Keiko (wife of David) Knode, Bellevue, Wash., John (Connie) Knode, Riceville, Iowa, Sharon (Al) Bergan Hodgdon, LeRoy, Steve (Glenda )Knode, Spring Valley, Minn., step children: Deborah (Dennis) Rice, Michael (Pam) Nagele LeRoy, and Michelle(Gary)Nagele,Spring Valley; eight grandchildren, step grandchildren, and many great and step-great grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his wife June, son David, son-in-law Stan Bergan, an infant grandson, and brothers Alfred, Glen and Paul.

Funeral services for George Knode will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy with Pastor Herman Bakker officiating. Burial will take place in LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held noon to 2 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Hindt Funeral Home of LeRoy is in charge of arrangements.
