Best Bets: Pacelli, pancakes and pianos

Published 10:17 am Friday, January 31, 2014

We’re drawing closer to the end of winter, which means sooner or later we won’t have to dig ourselves out of snow or endure blistering cold. There are plenty of reasons to keep warm out and about this week though, from fundraisers to galas, and music to, yes, pancakes. So feel free to enjoy the outdoors, at least the time it takes you to get from your car to the building.

1. A gala good time

6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. Pacelli Winter Gala and Hall of Honor induction, Austin Country Club, 28th Street Northeast, Austin.

Pacelli Catholic Schools is honoring volunteers and Pacelli parents on Saturday with its new Hall of Honor. Come at 6 p.m. to visit with your friends, stay for the dinner and the ceremony starting at 7 p.m.

2. It’s a trap … shooting fundraiser

6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, Austin Eagles wild game feed and AHS Trap Team fundraiser, Eagles Club, 107 11th St. NE, Austin.

There’s no telling how wild the Austin High School trapshooting team is going to get this year at competition, but they could sure use a little help paying for it all. The AHS trap team fundraiser is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Eagles Club, so hop on down and grab a bite for charity. It’s $14 for adults, $10 for children 13 and younger.

3. Stay warm; eat pancakes

9 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 2, Pancake feed and quilt sale, Grace Lutheran Church, 2001 Sixth Ave. SE, Austin, adults $5, family $15.

Did someone say pancakes? Austin always knows how to get some attention with some good old-fashioned flapjacks, and the Grace Lutheran Church pancake feed and quilt sale is no different.

4. Wonderful music

2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, “Paramount Special: What a Wonderful World,” Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, $15 advance tickets.

For a rockin’ good time, check out the Paramount later next week. David Eichholz and Ted Manderfeld will be ready to have a little fun with the musical standards we all know and love, and they’re ready to share a laugh with you at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Paramount.

5. Going wild

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, “Dueces Wild!” dueling pianos, Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE, tickets $18 in advance, $23 at door.

Eichholz and Manderfeld will step it up a notch Thursday night, with a wild improv performance filled with jokes, audience participation and, yes, even pianos. If you want to see just how funny a couple pianists can be, check out Deuces Wild!
