Austin grad Scott Lewis may be headed to the AHS athletic Hall of Fame this Friday, but he’s not done contributing to Packer sports.

Lewis, who graduated from AHS in 1987, played basketball and ran track and cross country for the Packers and now he’s gotten into coaching. Lewis is an AYB girls basketball coach for his daughter’s team and he knows how fortunate his team is.

When Lewis was growing up in Austin there was no traveling basketball team for seven years and he never had the chance to play on a traveling team.

“When I’m coaching my daughter’s team I know what I didn’t have so we’re trying to take it to the next level,” Lewis said.

Lewis, who took over Lewis Physical Therapy after his dad retired, has plenty of good memories from competing with the Packers. In cross country, he recalls running with Chris Harder and competing with him; in basketball, he recalls when Austin beat defending Big Nine champs Albert Lea on Hall of Fame night; in track, Lewis remembers how his distance medley relay team bounced back from not making it to state by one-hundredth of a second his junior year, to taking third in state his senior year.

Lewis was also part of thee 4 x 800-meter relay team that holds the second fastest time in Minnesota history.

“At the time we probably didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but now that it’s still that high we kind of realize what we did,” Lewis said.

Lewis initially got into running to stay in shape for basketball and now it has become a big part of his life. Lewis has run in 14 marathons and he also continues to play basketball when he can.
