The Packer gymnastics team had a showdown with a very familiar foe at the Brainerd Invite Saturday.

Austin, which came into the meet ranked No. 2 in Class ‘A’, was up to the challenge as it edged out No. 1 ranked Melrose 147.75-147.4 to win the eight-team meet.

Every point counted for the Packers as they put up a season’s best score

“We were in need of a big day and the girls came up through big,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “The girls worked hard at cheering for each other and picking each other up when a routine did not go well. It was a great day for us as we grow together as a team.”

Austin’s score on Saturday is six points better than any score it has put up this season and it’s even better than the 146.425 Austin put up when it took third in the state meet last season.

Austin’s Sela Fadness won the all-around competition with a 38.25, and she also took first in the beam and Abby Bickler took fifth in the all-around with a 36.85.
