The National Weather Service is calling for Christmas travelers to take a little extra caution.

NWS meteorologists are calling for bitter cold Monday and 1 to 3 inches of snow on Tuesday in Austin.

The NWS issued a wind chill advisory for the area that’s set to expire at noon, but wind chill should make temperatures feel as cold as -5 to -15 throughout the day, according to NWS meteorologist Rod Swerman.

“The wind chills aren’t going to recover much,” Swerman said.

Temperatures should drop to as low as -16 Monday night in Austin, but could rise to about 10 degrees as a high on Christmas Eve. There should be about 1.5 to 2.5 inches of snow Tuesday afternoon into evening.

“It should be a light, fluffy snow, the kind of picturesque Christmas snow everybody thinks about,” Swerman said.

There should be a high of 24 degrees on Christmas Day before dropping to about 1 degree Christmas night. Swerman said the Christmas Eve snow shouldn’t cause any traffic problems, but said residents should likely plan to arrive a little later when they travel.
