Carl Arnold Cochlin, 49, from Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Austin, passed away Nov. 30, 2013, from complications of cancer.

Carl was born in Austin, Minn., to Hubert “Mike” and Addie (Frondal) Cochlin on Feb. 14, 1964. He graduated from Austin High School in 1982. He married Marilyn Jansen-Classon on Nov. 29, 1996, and later divorced. Carl had a lifetime career in the food service industry working at several well-known establishments in the Austin/Albert Lea area including Lansing Corners, Holiday Inn, Perkins, Applebees and Big Island Bar and Grill. In 2003, he fulfilled his lifelong dream to open his own restaurant when he opened Grumpy’s in Grand Meadow. He moved to Phoenix in 2010, and went to work for Applebees in Happy Valley, Ariz. Carl was always known for lighting up the room with a joke and his laugh was contagious. He was also a great boss, mentor and friend.

He is survived by his mother, Addie Cochlin, of Austin;  daughter, Jenny (Jeff) Classon, of Owatonna; grandson, Hudson Walther, of Owatonna; sisters, Sharon Kelley, of St. Paul; Rose Porter, of Henderson, Nev.; Rebecca (John) Ramsey, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and Shirley (Donnie) Dreyer, of LeRoy, Minn.; brothers, Donald (Leigh) Cochlin, of Simi Valley, Calif.; Dan (Betty) Cochlin, of Muskogee, Okla.; Chris (Jill) Cochlin, of Lakeville, Minn.; and Larry (Julie) Cochlin, of Northfield, Minn.; a special great-niece, Ashlynn Porter, of Phoenix; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Hubert “Mike” Cochlin; brother, Peter Cochlin; nephew, Michael Cochlin; great niece, Alexandria Swanberg.

Carl will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Blessed be his memory.

Memorials are preferred.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Oakland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Albert Lea.
