Business community still alive in Austin

As we approach the end of 2013, it is with some sadness and hope that we note the changing business climate here in Austin.
2013 was the year we saw hometown staples and well-known businesses shut down, from the popular A&W — opened for 75 years in Austin — to the wonderful Gymocha coffee shop. In addition, other businesses like Ooh La La! Handbags & Accessories, Hair Plus, Oriental Express and Pizza Hut, also closed their doors in Austin. Other businesses are in dire financial straits and may leave town.
But all is not lost for Austin’s business community. We’re seeing an influx of interesting, well thought-out companies and stores coming to town and offering more goods, services and jobs to area residents. That’s a great win for the community.
We have businesses like Runnings which are investing in Austin. Runnings, the home improvement and farming store, is planning to open its doors in 2014, while some larger businesses have already come to town. Let’s not forget Jimmy John’s sandwich shop and the frozen yogurt store Sassy Strawberry, both of which have opened to acclaim in the community. There’s Dusty’s, a new bar, Barley’s Restaurant and Mayas Taquerias, ready to serve customers, too.
Austin is getting even more entertaining, with businesses like Enchantertainment, a costume rental/party business ready to serve costumes and make dreams come true with star appearances from Disney characters and well-known people. The Electric Lair at Oak Park Mall is bringing more contemporary bands and exciting music to the area, which is always a plus for Austin’s younger crowds.
In spite of our business losses, we have a lot of great new businesses here in town, which should help make new traditions in our area, and which could herald in prosperous times for years to come.
