Our Opinion: Support the Spirit

Support the SpiritVision 2020 organizers have declared this week, Nov. 18 to 23, to be Spirit Week, when residents are encouraged to do kind acts for one another, regardless of circumstance. It’s the kind of idea that can make a difference, and one Austinites should be excited about.
We are thrilled such an event is taking place in town, as the latest idea from Vision 2020’s Community Pride and Spirit Committee is expected to continue in subsequent years. The idea behind it is simple, according to organizers: Do small acts for one another, whether it be paying for someone’s coffee, brushing snow or scraping ice off a neighbor’s car, helping someone cross the street, or even waving and saying hello to a stranger.
Those ideas build up over time, and lead to the end goal of inspiring area residents and instilling a renewed sense of pride in Austin (though we would argue Austinites are plenty proud of their home, and for good reason).
At the end of the week, residents are encouraged to post their stories on www.vision2020austin.com/spreadthespirit/ to share the spirit. Residents can also find paper forms to share stories at the Austin Public Library, Coffee House on Main and Steve’s Pizza.
Those stories are guaranteed to spread, as more people get into the Spirit mood. It’s a great idea that requires little effort and is practically free for residents to participate in. We encourage as many people as possible to participate this year, and in years to come.
