Gertrude Amelia E’Louisa Rector, 93, of Austin, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Austin.

She was born in Leaf Valley Township near Garfield, Minn., on Sept. 23, 1920, the daughter of Fred and Ottillie (Brede) Schoeneck. As a child, Gertrude moved to Austin where she graduated from Austin High School in 1938. After completing her education, Gertrude worked for the Geo. A. Hormel Company until her marriage to Donald L. Rector on Sept. 7, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Gertrude also worked as a secretary for the railroad and spent several years as a secretary at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was active in the community, volunteering with the local Red Cross for more than 35 years, serving as a Gray Lady at St. Olaf Hospital, delivering Meals on Wheels, and serving as member of the YWCA Board and a member of the League of Women Voters. She was an active, longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and helping with the radio ministry. Gertrude and Don enjoyed many trips by car and playing golf at the Austin Country Club. She also loved to bowl, watch and feed birds in her back yard, quilt and crochet. She had been a resident of the Cedars of Austin since August of 2009.

Survivors include her son-in-law, Richard “Dick” (Gale Siegfreid) Heuton of Austin; three granddaughters, Natalie (Mike) Lay of Clovis, Calif., Diana (Keith) Lind of Moorhead and Heather (Steve) Durham of Appleton, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren, Devin Lay, Samantha Lay, Rebecca Lind, Lydia Lind, Jenna Lind, Megan Durham, Marney Durham and Owen Durham; sister-in-law, Norma Schoeneck of Austin; niece, Susan (Brian) Wolf of Kenosha, Wis.; nephew, Wayne Schoeneck Jr. of Minneapolis and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Rector; daughter, Karon Heuton and brother, Wayne Schoeneck.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Ogilvie, officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
