Genevieve L. Medgaarden, 95, of Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Sterling House of Owatonna.

Genevieve Loretta Matheis was born April 23, 1918, in Aberdeen, S.D. to George and Mary (Krebsbach) Matheis. On Oct. 9, 1940, Genevieve married Henry Medgaarden at St. John’s Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Minn. The couple had six daughters and three sons. Gen and Henry farmed all their married lives on the family farm north of Austin.

A member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Genevieve was active in the St. Jude’s Unit. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, baking, canning, making rugs, reading, and traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad. She especially loved to spend time with the grandchildren. Her generous donations of quilts to Catholic Charities were noted by the Bishop.

Survivors include her children, Judy (David) Laskewitz of Austin, Diane (Robert) Nelson of Minneapolis, Ruth Ann Erickson (Scott Ciminski) of Richfield, Mary (John) Butler-Fraser of Owatonna, Lynne Medgaarden (Russell Scott) of St. Paul, Glenn (Judy) Medgaarden and Gary (Jan) Medgaarden, both of Austin, and Jon Medgaarden (Peggy Lynch) of Owatonna; 90 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Velma Matheis of Adams and Evelyn Matheis of New Jersey; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Mary Matheis, her husband Henry Medgaarden in 1981, her daughter Joan Marie in 1956, five sisters and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin with Fr. Donald Zenk and Fr. John Traufler officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A 7 p.m. rosary service will be held at Worlein Funeral Home on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be directed to St. Augustine Catholic Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
