A traveling exhibit will reach Mower County next week when “Minnesota on the Map” stops at the Mower County Historical Society.

The traveling exhibit — which explores the accomplishments, sacrifices and challenges that shaped the legacy of Minnesota’s Greatest Generation — opens July 30 and remains on display through Sept. 27.

In “Minnesota Homefront, World War II,” visitors find out what it was like to cope with rationing, farm during a severe labor shortage, work on the Iron Range, develop inventions for the war, be trained as a translator at Fort Snelling and endure a starvation experiment for science and the war effort. The exhibit features nine graphic panels, audio interviews, songs of the period and a letter stories bin. This exhibit is on temporary loan from the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul and will travel to venues throughout Minnesota

A local exhibit has been created by the Mower County Historical Society to run concurrently during this period. The complimentary exhibit, Everyone’s War: The Mower County Homefront during World War II, will discuss local rationing efforts, war bonds, how Hormel Foods became a war facility and much more. The local exhibit was made possible by Austin American Legion Post 91, Lyle American Legion Post 105, Grand Meadow American Legion Post 140 and the life members of the historical society.

The exhibits will be available for viewing at the Mower County Historical Society from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Tuesday through Friday. Admission is $1 for the public and free for members of the historical society and children 17 or younger.
