Hounds win opener in Challenge

The Austin Greyhounds got their start to the Spamtown Challenge with an 8-2 win over Appleton, Wis., Thursday night at Marcusen Park.

Nels Nelson got the win going 5 innings, battling out of jams with runners in scoring position and no outs twice.

Alex Kasak gave up Appleton’s only two runs in relief.

The Hounds took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with Austin tacking on runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to cement the win.

Craig Braaten was 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and two-run homer in the fifth inning.

In the game before the Blue Sox fell 9-0 to Westmont, Ill. The Blue Sox will play Appleton today at 5 p.m. while the Hounds will take on Westmont at 7 p.m.
