Austin Police officers and Mower County Sheriff’s deputies issued 114 seatbelt tickets after a month-long Toward Zero Death campaign, part of a statewide initiative.

Police Capt. Dave McKichan, who oversees the local campaign, said officers and deputies put in a total of 90 overtime hours and made 228 traffic stops. Among seatbelt tickets, authorities cited people for driving after revocation, no insurance and even arrested three people for DWIs during the daytime, when the enforcement is run. McKichan said the DWI total is higher than usual.

Of all the traffic stops, 78 percent of drivers were wearing their seatbelts. However, McKichan said 500 people were randomly sampled after the campaign, and 87 percent were wearing seatbelts. He believes the campaign made a difference.
