ROCHESTER — Austin sophomore Carolyn Hackel defended one of her two Big Nine titles as the Packers took seventh place in the Big Nine girls track and field meet in Rochester Century Friday.

Hackel had a couple of showdowns with Rochester Mayo junior Sarah Wade, who beat Hackel in the 100-meter dash by .06 of a second. Hackel bounced back by beating Wade by .14 of a second in the 200-meter dash.

“Sarah and I are good buddies,” said Hackel, who also took third in the long jump. “If I had to lose to anyone, it would be her. She works just as hard, if not harder than I do.”

After falling short to Wade, Hackel shook off her frustration by taking a short nap in the tent to regroup for the 200-meter dash.

“I was kind of upset, so I went in the tent and took a little nap and refocused,” Hackel said. “I had to go out there and prove to myself that I’m still the Big Nine champion.”

Austin’s Madison Overby took second in the 1600-meter run and fourth in the 3200-meter run, and Austin’s Abby Snater took second in the pole vault.

Hackel, Overby and Snater earned All-Big Nine honors with their performances.

The Packers totaled a team score of 96 and Rochester Century won the meet with a score of 232.
