Betty Jane Cassem, 86, of Austin, Minnesota passed away after a brief illness on April 28, 2013 in Portland, Oregon. A short Memorial Service will be held at the Fort Snelling Chapel (1 Federal Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55450) at 12:30 p.m. May, 24 followed by burial at 2:05 p.m. on Friday, May 24 (Assembly Area No. 1), at the Fort Snelling Cemetery in St. Paul, Minnesota. She will be laid to rest with her husband Richard F. Cassem.
Betty was born to Edward and Caroline Evenson of Albert Lea, on Feb. 27, 1927. She attended Albert Lea High School, graduating with the class of 1945. During World War II, Betty was an avid letter writer to soldiers overseas. Many times she had as many as 10 letter writing campaigns going at once. On June 26, 1948, she married Richard. They made their home in Austin, Minn. residing there their entire life. Betty loved flower gardening, her dog Cloudy, traveling with her family across the United States and being with family/friends.
Betty Jane Cassem was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, her parents, and her sister, Lucille Johnson. She is survived by her sons Mark (Cindy) of Kasson, Minnesota, Bruce (Alison) of Portland, Oregon, and three grandsons, Matthew, Michael and Kevin. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
