Bargain business: Outlet store opening in Austin on May 1

West Austin Outlet is almost ready to give you a bargain.
The newest outlet store to come to town will open May 1, according to owner Benjamin Phorson, of Rochester.
“I’ve got electronics, housewares, … microwaves, small appliances, kitchen appliances,” he said. “You name it, it’s in there.”
Phorson decided last year the local market was ripe for a discount store selling liquidated or overstocked items from big-box competitors. He knew he wanted to come into Austin after realizing there were only a few big stores in town, so he secured the West Austin Outlet location, at 2909 W. Oakland Ave., next to Holiday Cars of Austin.
This isn’t the first discount store Phorson has, however. He decided to switch from the construction industry to retail management after listening to another longtime discount store owner.
Phorson plans to open in May with about six to seven employees and the potential for more if the store does well. He said items will be sold at about 60 percent of their retail value, but as new as if customers picked them up at a Walmart or Target.
“It’s pretty much the same thing [people are] getting in stores right now,” Phorson said.
West Austin Outlet will eventually have its own web site, where customers will be able to buy or bid on items up for auction that are in the 4,000-square-foot building.
A grand opening for West Austin Outlet is scheduled for this June. Hours are expected to be 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, though Phorson said those hours could change when the store opens.
