Alumni Update: Gunderson named All-MIAC honorable mention

BASKETBALL

Austin grad Connor Gunderson, who plays basketball for Division III St. Olaf College, was recently named All-MIAC honorable mention Wednesday.

Gunderson, who has started all three of his seasons with the Oles, led St. Olaf in scoring (12.9 points per game) as he was sixth in the league in field goals made per game) was 11th in the MIAC in field goal percentage (.537).

St. Olaf finished the season 9-16 overall.

Grand Meadow grad Jessica Benson, who plays basketball for Division II St. Cloud State, was named NSIC Second Team-All Conference.

Benson, who is in her sophomore year of eligibility, finished this season averaging a team-high 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Benson reached double-digit scoring in 24 of the 28 games played this year. She posted five double-doubles this season and reached her season and career-high on Jan. 11 at Southwest Minnesota State as she scored 32 points on 12 of 21 shooting.

The Huskies finished the season 19-9 overall.

Austin grad Babaye Oja will play in the Region XI women’s basketball tournament this season.

Oja, and Iowa Central Community College (21-8 overall), an NJCAA Division II school, will play Marshallton Thursday at 7 p.m. in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

During the regular season, Oja was third on the team with 9.6 points per game, and she also added 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

HOCKEY

Former Austin Bruin Christian Folin scored the go-ahead goal with 4:47 left in the game to vault University of Massachusets-Lowell past Boston College Tuesday.

Folin, who is in his first year with Division I UML, now has four goals on the season as a defenseman.

Folin has 17 points on the season and he is plus 17.
