Funeral services for Evelyth Tiede, 94, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. The Rev. Greg Ofsdahl will officiate. Interment will be at Lake Fremont Cemetery in Dunnell at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Evelyth Hilma Tiede died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.

Evelyth Hilma (Danielson) Tiede was born on Jan. 6, 1919, to Oscar Freedolph and Hilma Josephine (Nystrom) Danielson on the family farm in Sherburn. She was baptized in 1919 and confirmed on Aug. 6, 1933, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dunnell. Evelyth grew up in Sherburn, attended District 70 school where she graduated from the eighth grade and then graduated from high school in 1937. She went on to receive her bachelor of science degree from Mankato State College in 1957. Evelyth taught District 128, District 59 and District 100 in Martin County. She also taught at the Dalles Public School in Oregon, TriMont Public School, Fairmont Public School and Alden Public School having completed 32 years of teaching. Evelyth was united in marriage to Alvin Mortensen in June 1943. Three children were born to this union, Karen Diane, David Lewis and Arvid Leland. Alvin passed away in December of 1951 of a heart attack. In April of 1962, she married Wesley Pierson of Alden. He passed away in September of 1967, of Lou Gehrig’s disease. In October of 1970, she married Lawrence Tiede of Alden. Lawrence died in 2002. Evelyth was a past member at Mansfield Lutheran Church where she was active in altar guild, circle and WELCA. More recently Evelyth was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. Evelyth had also been a member of the Retired Teacher’s Group, Alden Tuesday Club, Senior Citizen Clubs of Alden, Book Club, and Homemaker’s Club. She was an active volunteer in Alden Senior Dining, Alden Community Museum and the Freeborn County Historical Museum as a tour guide for school groups. Evelyth was voted Freeborn County volunteer of the year in 2007.

Survivors include her children, Karen (James) Haukoos of Buffalo City, Wis., David (Margaret) Mortensen of Andover, Arvid (Gaylene) Mortensen of Winona, Marlin (Sharon) Herfendal of Albert Lea, Duane(Connie) Tiede of Naperville, Ill., and Janet (Wayne) Redman of Comfrey; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyth was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Alvin Mortensen, Wesley Pierson and Lawrence Tiede; step-daughter, Judith Ann Herfendal; grandson, Ian Mortensen; brothers Floyd, Reuben and Leland Danielson; and sister, Mildred Danielson.

Memorials preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Freeborn County Historical Museum, Alden Senior Citizens or the Alden Senior Dining.
