Guitarist, symphony pair for performance

The Paramount Theatre and the Austin Symphony Orchestra are pairing up for the first time ever.

“Blue Jeans, Billy and Beethoven,” featuring guitarist Billy McLaughlin, will take place at the Paramount at 2 p.m. Feb. 24. Orchestra organizers say the program is an unusual combination of classic Beethoven and contemporary new age jazz guitar.

Renowned guest artist Billy McLaughlin will be playing his acoustic guitar accompanied by the orchestral strings. He is recognized as an innovative performer and composer who embraces the advantages of acoustic guitar amplification, unorthodox techniques and altered tunings while celebrating a gift of melody. Several years ago he was diagnosed with a devastating medical disorder called focal dystonia in his left hand, and he determinedly taught himself to play with his right hand. His story is the subject of an award-winning documentary film called “Changing Keys — Billy McLaughlin and the Mysteries of Dystonia.”

The program opens with Beethoven‘s “Coriolan Overture.” Beethoven’s well-known “7th Symphony” concludes the program, a work well known for its rhythmic devices suggestive of dance.
