Austin High School’s Music Listening Team, consisting of Kristen Carlson, Ethan Johnson and Matthew Tylutki and coached by Brian Johnson, won the Region 3 contest at Winona State University on Friday, Jan. 18 and will now compete at the MLC State Finals at Augsburg College on Friday, Feb. 1.
The state competition, pits up to 100 3-person teams against each other in a battle of music identification and analysis, utilizing musical selections from the Medieval period through the present.
“It’s pretty cool that we were able to not only improve our score from last year but also win our region, especially since most of the teams have music history/theory classes that they are in,” Matt Tylutki, a junior at Austin High School, said. “We pretty much did all of the work on our own. We’re really looking forward to state.”
This is Austin’s fourth competition and first state appearance.
