The Austin girls hockey team out-shot Winona, but is still ended up on the wrong side of a 5-1 score in a loss at Riverside Arena Tuesday.
The Packers (1-4 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) held a 30-24 advantage in shots, but Carly Moran scored a hat trick on three breakaway goals to lift the Winhawks (2-1 overall, 2-1 Big Nine).
“We just shot it right into the goaltender and we weren’t looking for the open net,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said.
Austin’s lone goal came on a score by Kennedy Thompson on an assist from Camille Anderson that made it 3-1 in the second period.
Austin freshman Mara Overby had 19 saves in the loss.
