Dr. Michael Grenier's "Natura" exhibit is on display at the James Wegner Art Gallery at Riverland Community College. Grenier will give a talk about his prairie-inspired work at a closing reception next Wednesday.

A little bit of nature has made its way to Riverland Community College.

“Natura,” the latest exhibit at the James Wegner Art Gallery inside Riverland, will soon close, but not before residents can hear from Dr. Michael Grenier speaks on his art at a closing reception next Wednesday.

Grenier, an adjunct professor at Riverland’s Owatonna campus, created the exhibit after being inspired by Minnesota prairies.

“It’s certainly got some interesting images,” said Tim Jones, Riverland art instructor and curator for the gallery. “People have been talking about it.”

Grenier’s exhibit consists of multimedia art, from photos to sculptures and even charcoal drawings. Each piece is influenced by natural elements found in local prairie land, and Grenier found ways to incorporate elements taken from nature. His photos are printed on acoustic tiles made from corn-based products, according to Jones.

“The artist has made every effort to include materials that come from the prairie and the natural environment,” Jones said.

This is the latest multimedia exhibit to come to Riverland, a growing national trend in art as well.

“The idea of artist used to mean people specializing in different forms, but now the norm is becoming more multimedia work, and the idea of the artist going beyond media,” Jones said.

The exhibit is open this week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 28. Grenier will discuss the meaning behind his work at a closing reception held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
