The Austin boys soccer team is one win away from its first Big Nine title in school history after it took care of business in a 4-0 win over Rochester John Marshall (4-9 overall, 3-5 Big Nine) in Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.

The Packers (13-2 overall, 7-1 Big Nine) took command early as Abinyan Lual scored two goals in the first half on assists from Jake Hagen-Erickson and Omot Okello.

In the second half, Austin put it away as Carlos Vera scored his first career varsity goal on an assist from Francisco Torres and Torres scored on an assist from Roel Torres.

Vera normally plays midfielder but Austin head coach Jens Levisen let him play forward Tuesday and Verra scored within six minutes of stepping on the field.

“I’ve seen Carlos hit some good shots in practice and warm-ups so I gave him a chance to play forward,” Levisen said. “It was pretty exciting for everyone when he scored.”

Collin Weisert had 12 saves for the Packers, who had 29 shots on the night.

Austin will now host Owatonna with the Big Nine title on the line Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Art Hass Stadium.

The Packers need to win to take the conference title.

“We’ve been taking it one game at a time and we’ll ready for this one,” Levisen said. “We’ll be hungry to get after them.”
