RE-fest adds ride, more workshops

RE-fest is bringing sustainable practices to the people this year.
The organizers of Austin’s annual environmental and sustainable practices fair are bringing workshops and activities to outdoor stages from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, so more people can learn how to live cleaner and healthier.
“What we’re trying this year is to get more information out there,” said Judy Enright, physical plant manager at Riverland Community College.
That’s why workshops will take place on a stage this year, though there will still be a few indoor events.
This year’s keynote speaker is Kenny Salwey, one of the last “Mississippi River Rats” who made his living on the river. At 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., he’ll present a BBC documentary about living on the Mississippi, and speak on his experiences on the river.
Yet green practices aren’t the only healthy methods on display this year. Enright said organizers are emphasizing healthier living as another green method, which is why residents can peruse bicycles from Rydjor Bike Shop at RE-fest this year.
The first annual RE-fest Ride will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, with registration starting at 10 a.m. Participants can ride in the four-mile, 20-mile and 50-mile races, and proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for Riverland’s Wind Turbine Technician program. The ride costs $25 per person and $50 per family up to four people, and will include a free RE-fest T-shirt.
The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Riverland’s Austin campus, and is open to the public.
