Girls soccer: Packers win one for Pablo

The Austin girls soccer team had plenty of reasons to be excited about their game against Worthington Saturday.
They had beaten Worthington (2-6-1 overall) 3-0 earlier in the season and they were coming off their fifth shutout win of the season.
Then Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo came sprinting down the sideline 10 minutes into the game. Camarena-Corzo had been with his wife as she gave birth to their son, Pablo, the night before, but he wasn’t about to miss his Packers and they rewarded him by winning 5-0 in Art Hass Stadium.
Once Camarena-Corzo arrived, the team began to chant Pablo’s name throughout the game and it had a positive effect as Austin outshot Worthington 21-0.
“It was a perfect weekend,” Camerena-Corzo said. “To hear my baby’s name being called and then seeing how they worked harder was great. It’s great to have an amazing group of girls. I can’t be away from any of the games so they can see that I respect them and that way they can respect me.”
Austin senior Carley Grunewald, who had two goals and two assists, put the Packers on the board in the fourth minute on a 20-yard lob shot before Camarena-Corzo showed up. Once their coach was on the sideline, Austin senior Nicole Lipari headed in a Brianna Byam corner kick in the 15th minute and Grunewald connected on a 20-yard line drive in the 26th minute to make it 3-0.
“We wanted to do it for Pablo,” Austin forward Carolyn Hackel said. “(Coach) wanted to come, but we didn’t know if he was coming because his wife just gave birth. We had just scored our first goal and then we saw him coming and that motivated us even more to score for Pablo.”
The Packers (6-5 overall) put the game completely out of reach in the second half when Hannah Voogd knocked in a put-back goal in the 54th minute and Hackel tapped in a shot on a pass from Grunewald in the 60th minute.
Hackel, who now has two goals on the season, has had plenty of chances this season but she’s been unlucky around the net as of late.
“Getting another one showed that it wasn’t just a one time thing and it can happen again,” Hackel said. “Carley had a perfect pass and I just went up and scored.”
Grunewald gave the Packers a boost from the start as she fired off three shots near the goal in the first five minutes of the game.
“That’s just how I always play,” Grunewald said.
The Packers are feeling much better about their team now, especially since Saturday’s win gives Austin one more win than it had last season and guaranteed Austin its winningest season since at least 2007.
“We’ve always had good chemistry, but we’re finally now having the confidence and we’re learning everybody’s strengths so we flow together without even thinking about it,” Grunewald said.
