WINONA — The Packers scored their most dramatic win of the season as a late goal put them ahead for good in a 2-1 win at Winona (6-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 Big Nine) in a boys soccer game Thursday.
Austin’s Roel Torres took a pass from his older brother Francisco Torres and scored a goal to clinch the win for Austin (12-1 overall, 6-1 Big Nine) with 20 minutes left in the contest.
Winona had tied the game just a couple of minutes earlier and Abinyan Lual had put Austin up 1-0 on a rebound off an Omot Okello shot with 23 minutes left in the game.
Austin is ranked for the first time in school history as it made it’s debut in the Class ‘A’ polls at No. 8 in the state.
“That’s a pretty big thing for these guys and it’s a huge accomplishment for the program,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said.
Things don’t get any easier for Austin as it will travel to Rochester Lourdes (11-1 overall) Saturday for a 1 p.m. game and Austin will host Rochester John Marshall and Owtanna next week.
If the Packers beat JM on Tuesday, they can win the first Big Nine title in school history with a win over the Huskies Thursday.
“The JM game is huge, but it’s one big game after another for us now,” Levisen said. “The game against Lourdes could be a preview of the section title game if each team continues to play well.”
