MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Twin Cities alternative weekly is splitting from Backpage, an advertising website police have linked underage sex trafficking.

A group of executives from Village Voice Media is buying City Pages and 12 other weeklies from VVM. Backpage will become an independent entity operated by the company’s founder.

The Star Tribune says Backpage has been a lucrative operation for VVM, generating more than $28 million in the past year. VVM president Scott Tobias says City Pages will still run adult classifieds, but it will be a tiny share of its revenue.

Tobias says there are no plans to take the weeklies online only.
