First Austin Police 5K run/walk changes date

The Austin Police Officers Association has changed the date of its first 5,000-meter run/walk.

The event that was originally planned for Sept. 8 has been moved back one week to Sept. 15. According to officer Mark Walski, organizers didn’t want to hold the event the same day as the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center’s 8K run/walk.

The 5K, organized by Walski, will start at 9 a.m. at the Todd Park north fields. Registration will begin at 8 and is open to the public. Registration for the event is now $25 on or before Sept. 9 or $30 thereafter. All participants will receive a T-shirt, too. Registration forms are available at the Austin Police Department or South Central Athlete.

The Austin High School cross country team will also run for the police department. All proceeds from the event will go toward programs around Austin and Mower County. A portion will support the cross country team.

From now on, the 5K run/walk will take the place of the Austin Police Department vs. Austin Fire Department softball game.
