The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s national Fill the Boot Campaign may have seen a drop-off from last year, but firefighters are still happy with the total.

This year’s campaign — last Wednesday through Friday in Austin — raised $13,400. Though last year’s campaign raised nearly $20,000, firefighter and local MDA Coordinator Tim Olson said this year’s total is right in line with previous years. Furthermore, he said Austin consistently ranks near the top in the nation for amount raised per capita.

“I think that says something about the character of the people here,” Olson said.

Olson added the sheer number of charities growing in the community may mean people are spreading their money around more or may have already donated what they can.

Olson is proud that every $800 is able to send a child with muscular dystrophy to a summer camp. Olson said the local drive wouldn’t be possible if a few select people didn’t make the effort.

“I’d like to personally thank the citizens of Austin and personally thank Fire Chief [Mickey] Healey and the city council for their support,” Olson said.
