Council to pitch final tax proposal

It’s time to wrap up budget talk.
The Austin City Council will discuss a finalized 2013 proposed budget and tax levies during a work session Monday, Aug. 20, after its public meeting. At its last work session, the council discussed a 3.14 percent tax levy increase as part of the proposed 2013 budget. That increase would bring in an extra $125,000 and at Austin’s current number of property owners, would raise the annual taxes on a home valued at $105,000 by about $12. The council must adjust and finalize a proposed budget and tax levy so they can approve each item at its Sept. 4 public meeting. The city can’t raise tax levies after Sept. 15, even if it makes changes to the budget.
The city’s Local Goverment Aid for 2013 is already set at about $7.12 million, the same as it was for 2012.
In addition, the council will set future hearings for two dangerous dog designations at its public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, inside City Council Chambers.
The hearings, which may be set for the next council meeting on Sept. 4, will be appealed by Jessica Hnattyszyn and Laura Marsolek, respectively.
The council will also discuss city department staffing requests, additional stop signs at Banfield Elementary School, funding requests from local organizations, options for the Downtown bathrooms, and street dance requests by the Austin Downtown Alliance, among other things.
