Contractors had a hiccup with one of the new tennis courts west of Neveln Elementary School this week.

The northwest corner of one of the north courts had too large of a slope to be sanctioned under Minnesota State High School League rules, according to Austin Public Schools officials. That’s why The Joseph Company, the general contractor for the project, is tearing out part of the court at no extra charge to the district.

“We’re basically going to get it done right,” said Mark Stotts, finance and operations director.

Stotts said the northwest corner of the court in question had a 3-inch drop in slope when there should only have been a 1-inch drop. District officials and contractors aren’t sure who made the error or when it took place, but district officials want to make sure the courts are sanctioned for high school tournament play.

Contractors are expected to finish the court soon, but the acrylic surface on the northern courts won’t be done this year, since the acrylic needs optimal weather conditions to finish and the earliest it would get done is September. The southern courts are expected to wrap up on time, acrylic surface and all. All tennis courts will be usable this year, Stotts said.
