Lighten up, folks, because it’s time to get out this weekend and support a good cause. Try to get to any of these good-natured events and make a difference.
1. Haitian Hustle
For those with plenty of ambition, get up early Saturday morning for the Austin Haitian Hustle 5K Fun Run for Education. The event is hosted by and starts at Faith Church, 1800 12th Street SW, and begins at 8 a.m.
2. Veterans barbecue
Anyone willing to go a bit farther? The All Veterans Al Eras family barbecue starts at 1 p.m. Saturday in Northwood, Iowa. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a dish, if they like.
3. Magic the Gathering
Though it’s no benefit, it’s bound to be fun for local comic and game enthusiasts. The third round of the Planeswalker Proving Grounds Magic the Gathering tournament at Legacy Comics and Games in the Oak Park Mall begins at 5 p.m. this Saturday.
4. Maja’s Miracle
Don’t pack it in just because it’s Sunday. Maja’s Miracle, a benefit for Maja Iverson of Rose Creek will be from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn and Torge’s Live in Austin, 1701 Fourth Street NW. Five bands, auctions, a raffle — you name it; they have it set for a good time.
5. Arts Triathlon
Come Wednesday, when you’re tired and ready for the week to end, get ready for a triathlon. OK, no running is involved. It’s the Fourth Avenue Arts Triathlon starting at 1:30 p.m. Check in at the Park and Rec Pavilion and get your art on.
Don’t forget, storytimes at the Austin Public Library are still in swing on Tuesdays through the end of August. Tuesdays on Main is still in the midst of its first season, as well.
