Best Bets: A transformation of the arts

Published 10:11 am Friday, August 24, 2012

Austin is undergoing a transformation this weekend. Well, at least one, big, old part of it. But before that, wind down the dog days of summer with a splash.

A dip for dogs

Pool filters, meet your match. The fifth annual Doggy Dip at the Austin Municipal Pool on North Main Street will be from 6 to 7 p.m. this Friday. Don’t worry about all the dog hair in the water, but remember to tell your pup, “No running around the pool.”

A different beast

We go from man’s best beast to another: It’s “The Enchantment of Beauty and the Beast,” 7 p.m. Friday at the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for kids 3 to 12; younger get in free. The show will also open at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Art in the making

3.) Then comes the transformation — at the historic downtown power plant just a block and a half east of the Paramount Theatre. The plant has been cleaned, some machinery decommissioned, and prepared for the Austin Artworks Festival. Organizers have been planning for a long time, and now they can finally enjoy the artwork, music and performances. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Treasures found

4.) Lost treasure lies in the woods at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, 1304 21st St. NE, and somebody needs to find it. OK, there is no real treasure, but there is a geocache treasure hunt for ages 11 to 14 on Monday ($5) from 1 to 3 p.m., and for families on Wednesday ($10) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fire up that GPS and find whatever is out there.
