Summerset mixes art and Steve Martin comedy

Take one part Einstein, one part Picasso and one part Steve Martin-style antics, and what do you have? Summerset Theatre’s next big show.

Summerset Theatre’s second production of their 45th season, Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin, opens Tuesday, July 14.

What if Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso met in a Parisian café in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics and the celebrated painter set the art world afire? In his first comedy for the stage, popular actor and screenwriter Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune. You’ll roar with laughter as these two geniuses (plus an unlikely guest from Memphis) muse on philosophy, art, and science with infectious dizziness.

Lucas Johnson directs Picasso at the Lapin Agile, as well as designing the set.

“This is the second time I have directed this play,” said Johnson. “It is, with a doubt, my favorite show. I fell in love with it on college, where I saw two different productions that were entered in the KCACTF (Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival) region V in 1998. That year, and [from] 2000 to 2001, it was one of the top ten most produced plays in America.”

Picasso at the Lapin Agile will open at 7:30 p.m. July 10. Other performances are at 7:30 p.m. All performances are held at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre on the Austin campus of Riverland Community College.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students age 16 and under. Tickets are currently on sale at the Summerset Box Office, located in room E107 in the East Building of the Riverland Community College Austin campus. Box office hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one hour before performances. The box office can be contacted at 507-433-0595 or by emailing boxoffice@riverland.edu.
