Northwest Austin a driving nuisance?

A car versus motorcycle accident that happened on Sunday may be part of a larger issue in northwest Austin, several residents say.
According to Cynthia Corbly, who lives at the intersection of Eighth Street and 10th Avenue NW, Eighth Street’s stop sign on the north side of the intersection is blocked by a tree. That, she said, was the problem for Lourdes Falch — the 48-year-old driver of the car that hit 48-year-old Charles Marks on his Harley Davidson.
Though the stop sign is visible through the tree branches, along with the sign on the other side of the street, Corbly said that intersection and others in northwest Austin have caused problems for drivers, as well.
She said she has seen so many “almost” accidents, and added a car almost hit two skateboarders on the same day as the motorcycle accident.
Bill Bernand, who also lives at that intersection, said he has seen his fair share of “almost” accidents, too, and not just at that intersection. Much of the area between Fourth Street NW and 14th Street NW is riddled with two-way stops and uncontrolled intersections.
“All over this side of town,” Bernand said about the intersections and their potential for accidents. “Almost been in a few myself.”
Bernand said he wouldn’t mind if his community was lined with four-way stops all the way throughout. As for trees, Austin Parks and Rec Director Kim Underwood said her department tries to trim them as they become an issue. Furthermore, Parks and Rec relies on city police and homeowners to speak up about problem areas. Though people are saying northwest Austin has some tricky intersections, Underwood said she has not received any calls about that situation. Anyone with concerns or questions about obstructed signs, she added, is urged to call Austin Parks and Rec at 507-433-1881.
