Board to get answer on grandstand dry rot

The Mower County Fair Board should have an answer today concerning potential dry rot at the fair’s grandstand.
This spring, fair board members went to the county’s building committee with fears that there are signs of dry rot in the main support columns of the grandstand. On Monday, a structural engineer’s report will be presented to the fair board.
That report will be presented again during the county board’s regular meeting, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Commissioner Jerry Reinartz, who sits on the building committee, confirmed the report was given to Public Works Director Mike Hanson and other county officials last week, but he declined to disclose the findings until after the fair board is notified.
If the structure is deemed unsafe, Reinartz said, the board would likely have to look to alternative options for the fair this year like portable bleachers.
If the structural integrity of the grandstand is compromised, Reinartz said, it would likely be a costly repair — if it would even be worth repairing at all.
The county board is responsible for maintaining the buildings at the fair.
“Our main concern is safety,” Reinartz said in May. “If it’s deemed to be unsafe by this structural engineer, then we’re not going to allow it to be used.”
