Best Bets: Music, dancing, inanimate birthdays
Published 5:39 am Friday, July 27, 2012
For those who aren’t easily entertained, this is their week. Celebrations abound in the county and farther, including a 25th and 75th birthday for two special occasions.
1. Hayfield Hey Days
That first birthday is in Hayfield. Fellow Norse, head to north and say ‘hey there.’ The 25th annual celebration already started on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Budweiser Clydesdales, Time Machine, a B25 bomber, antique shows and more highlight the quarter-century celebration. Just head north on Highway 56, there.
2. YMCA’s National Dance Day
Austin is highlighting a national craze this weekend. It’s called Zumba, and the Austin YMCA, 704 First Drive NW, is joining the rest of the U.S. with it on National Dance Day this Saturday. Events start from 9 to 11 a.m. with Zumba in the Y parking lot and aqua Zumba in the pool from 9 to 9:30 a.m. From 9:45 to 10:15 a.m., Zumba gold will be in the fitness studio, and Kids Zumbatomic will be held 10:15 to 11 a.m. in the fitness studio.
3. A ‘Spamtastic’ celebration
Happy 75th birthday, Spam. Even though your birthday was on July 5, Hormel Foods Corp., The Temptations, Austin Big Band and the city of Austin are throwing you a party from 4 to 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the Hormel Corporate Offices, at 1 Hormel Place in Austin. Spam cake, anyone?
4. Summerset Theatre’s ‘Cas on Delivery!’
Summerset Theatre is at it again, too. The group will perform “Cash on Delivery!” starting 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Frank W. Bridges Theatre, 1900 Eighth Ave. NW. Performances continue at that same time through Saturday, Aug. 4, and tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students 16 and younger.
5. Ann Zimmerman at the Nature Center
Ann Zimmerman is at it again, as well. The singer/songwriter who visited the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center last year is returning next Thursday for concerts at 9 a.m. for senior special, 1:30 p.m. for families and 7 p.m. for an evening concert.
Grab a Nature Center newsletter or check out its bulletin board. Plenty of other outdoor events are scheduled before the year’s end, including a nature play, Monarch tagging on Fridays, a raptors presentation, conoeing, geocaching and more.
