Heaviest rain, flooding skirt Austin

Mower County dodged the bulk of severe weather Thursday night, as some areas of the state received 20 times more rain than the Austin area.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis., Lansing received the highest total in Mower County at .47 inches, a far cry from Cannon Falls’ 8.41 inches. That’s also more than Austin has received the entire year. Austin received just .27 inches Thursday night.
Meteorologist Jeff Boyne said the Cannon Falls area is struggling with flooding on the Little Cannon River. Rochester and its surrounding area received rainfall totals in the 2-inch range and also received some wind damage. Albert Lea also received reports of funnel clouds on Thursday evening and sounded its tornado sirens; however, Boyne said no tornado warnings were issued in the area.
While Cannon Falls, Red Wing and other cities just southeast of the Twin Cities were pounded with rain, many areas badly needed precipitation.
“It was definitely much-needed rainfall across the area,” Boyne said. “We had barely gotten any rain most of the month. Most places were a quarter-inch or less. The crops definitely needed it.”
More rain may be on its way tonight and throughout the weekend; however, Boyne said chances of more severe storms aren’t likely until Monday, which could bring strong winds and hail.
