Best Bets: Priceless treasures, picnics and politics
Published 11:54 am Friday, June 1, 2012
A little cold snap never kept anybody from having fun in June, right? Barring any freak snowstorms, people should get out and experience some of the opportunities happening as the season chugs along.
1. Doughnut Day
Just being out and about may be enough to take part in this first event, provided you have a little extra in your pockets. Donate to the Salvation Army’s Doughnut Day at many of the participating businesses that are accepting monetary donations, and receive a free doughnut. All proceeds will go to the Church of the Salvation Army.
2. Three River Days
Three days of dawdling, gawking and digging for unique treasures are set for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Mower County Fairgrounds. It’s the 9th Annual Three Rivers Days Antiques and Flea Market. The show runs until 5 p.m. on Friday and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, too. Keep your eyes peeled.
3. Charlie Parr
Original sounds of Austin are set for the Paramount Theatre, 125 Fourth Ave. NE. Charlie Parr, whose guitar music is inspired by his life growing up in Austin, and the Bosso Poetry Company are set for their 7:30 p.m. concert this Saturday. Tickets are $12 at the door or $5 for students.
4. Lake Louise open house
Though it is outside and doesn’t have a house, Lake Louise State Park won’t be prevented from holding its annual open house with food and entertainment on June 3. Lake Louise, located just on the northeast end of LeRoy, will host the open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Park stickers are required for entrance, and one-day passes will be available for purchase, as well.
Other events
Let’s rewind for a minute; Spamtown Belle rides are open for the season on East Side Lake on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer for just a buck for kids and $2 for adults. Also, for all those politically savvy individuals out there, don’t forget that filing to run for public offices closes June 5.
