Austin Public Schools officials are almost ready to wrap up the name search for a new fifth- and sixth-grade intermediate school.
Residents can still suggest names by going to the district’s website or stopping at the district office through Saturday, according to district officials. The Austin Public School board heard an update on the school name situation at a meeting Monday. Board members approved a committee of eight to 10 people who will start meeting in July to review the name submissions thus far and recommend several names to the school board at its Aug. 27 special session. Superintendent David Krenz said the committee is made up of teachers, students, community members and business leaders who will look through the 70 to 80 names posted thus far.
The board hopes to decide on a name for the new school by the end of the year.
In other news, the board approved the Austin High School student agenda for next year. While most changes were minor, the agenda includes the new visitor guidelines, which state the district “reserves the right to closely monitor school visitors” so classes can remain free of distraction.
