Austin 16U softball team goes 3-1 in New Ulm

NEW ULM — The Austin 16U softball team picked up three wins on Saturday, but it lost an elimination game to the Rochester Eagles 6-4 on Sunday at the New Ulm Tournament.

All six of New Ulm’s runs were unearned and they were all scored in the second inning.

Austin’s Shaley Vesel hit a solo homerun and Sydney Murphy, who had nine RBIs Saturday, knocked in a pair of runs to close the gap, but Austin couldn’t take the lead.

Austin beat Simley 14-1, knocked off New Ulm 4-3 and topped the Mankato Peppers 4-3 Saturday.

“We played great on Saturday, but our girls just aren’t quite in that believing state yet,” Austin head coach Lisa Quednow-Bickler said.

Abbey Ball picked up a pair of wins on Saturday as she struck out 15 and allowed just two hits for Austin (11-10-1 overall).
