Pieces can include a variety of subjects

The Austin Area Art Center’s newest exhibit, which will be on display for the month of June, takes a sci-fi twist.

Science fiction is the theme for the show’s artwork.

The show, open to the public, will run from May 30 through June 24. There is a nominal $1 entry fee with no limit on the number of pieces entrants can show. All artwork must be brought to the Austin Area Art Center located in Oak Park Mall no later than May 27 by 4 p.m. All hanging artwork should be properly framed and wired for hanging.

When people think of science fiction, they normally think of aliens, spacecraft and neutron blasters.

The Art Center’s take on sci-fi will focus on anything of a surreal nature, from “outer limits” aliens to dragons from mythology and everything unnatural in-between.

Gothic gargoyles, fairies, gnomes, super-heros and whatever the mind can dream up are acceptable entries for this supernatural extravaganza, and abstract art, comic book art and fictional beings of any kind are welcome.

This includes photos, paintings, sculptures, computer graphic arts and anything that portrays an interpretation of science fiction.

The Art Center will hold a reception for the exhibiting artists on Sunday, June 3, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The public is welcome to view this display and talk to the artists. For more information on exhibiting, call the Center at 507-433-8451 during regular business hours, Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. or visit www.austinareaartcenter.com.
