The Austin girls golf team finished strong on the back nine as it took second place its first home triangular of the year in Austin Country Club Tuesday.

Austin's Lauren Stasi hits an approach shot on No. 1 during a triangular Tuesday afternoon at Austin Country Club.

All of Austin’s golfers shot better on the back nine than they did in the front nine. Junior Lauren Stasi showed the most improvement as she shot a 43 on the last nine holes after hitting a 52 on the front nine.

“I was hitting my drives better than I have been and I was only one over after four on the back nine. That kept me going and it helped improve my score,” said Stasi, who led the Packers with a 95. “I think it’s just getting rid of all the nerves. Everyone calms down on the back nine and they get used to being around each other.”

Caitlyn Stanley, a junior, posted the second best score for the Packers as she finished with 99. She said it’s becoming much more common for her and her teammates to finish under 100 this season.

“Our top four is pretty consistent now. Last year, getting over 100 wasn’t that rare, but now it’s kind of bad if you get it,” Stanley said. “I had really good drives and my three-wood was working for me. I was just playing consistent (today).”

Austin finished with a team score of 399, while Rochester Mayo won the invite with a 365. Winona finished with an incomplete score.

“They’re getting better, we’ve just got to improve on our short game,” Austin head coach Erik LaRock said.

Austin scores: Lauren Stasi, 95; Caitlyn Stanley, 99; Steph Justice, 100; Shannon Stutzman, 105; Sydney Irish, 118; Kristine Snyder, 119
