The Packers are beginning to believe in themselves.

Despite committing an error to put the game in jeopardy in the top of the eighth inning, the Austin baseball team bounced back and walked off with a 5-4 win in the bottom of the eighth against Faribault in Dick Seltz Field Thursday.

Anthony Condit scored the game winning run when Gabe Kasak hit a slow roller that hugged the foul line but stayed fair.

“When the ball was hit I thought it was a foul ball and I went back (towards third) to try again,” said Condit, who finished 2-for-4. “Then all of the sudden there was all this commotion and yelling so I started to run home. Then the umpire pointed home and that was pretty awesome.”

Austin loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff-single by Zach Wilder, a Faribault error on a Condit bunt and a bunt single by Tommy Olmsted. Trevor Feuerhak drew a four-pitch walk to plate the tying run and set up Kasak.

Austin (6-10 overall, 5-9 Big Nine) has now won its last two games and four of its last six.

“I was just looking to drive the ball and I ended up with a little sacrifice,” Kasak said. “I think we’re all feeling pretty high, that’s two wins in a row and that doesn’t happen very often around here. It’s nice to get a streak going.”

While Austin allowed a run in the top of the eighth off an error, freshman pitcher Nik Gasner didn’t let it get to him as he ended the frame by forcing a pair of ground-outs.

The Packers also shook off a couple of early errors that led to them falling behind 3-0 in the second inning.

“We’ve talked about composure all year and thinking about the next play and the next pitch and not worrying about what’s happened,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said. “Hopefully it’s sinking in a bit, because that’s hurt us in the past when we’ve been dwelling on some of those plays.”

Austin tied the game in the fourth inning when Zach Huntley flared a two-run single into shallow right with two outs.

After Huntley’s hit, seven Packers were retired in order and Austin had the bottom of the order leading off the bottom of the eighth. But the Packers didn’t lose their cool.

“All year everyone’s been getting on each other about getting down after getting behind in games,” Condit said. “We’re starting to realize that you’re never out of a ball game and you can see that when we play. It’s been fun.”

Austin is now off for a week as it will host Winona May 17.
