ROCHESTER — The Austin baseball team lost a pair of heartbreakers by scores of 5-4 in eight innings and 4-3 to Rochester Century (13-5 overall, 12-4 Big Nine) on the road Saturday.
The Packers (6-13 overall, 5-12 Big Nine) led the opener 4-2 in the seventh inning, but Century tied the game on an Austin throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The Packers had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the eighth, but Sean Coffey hit into a double play. Century won the game with a single in the eighth.
Austin committed nine errors on the day and both of Century’s game winning runs were unearned.
“It was a tough day in the field and the wind was blowing in strong,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins. “We’ve shown we can compete with the best teams in the conference, but we’re just not closing out games.”
