Austin High School has selected its next girls basketball coach.

Todd Johnson, who graduated from AHS and spent 18 years as the varsity assistant coach at Bloomington Jefferson, will take over the head girls basketball coaching position with the Packers, according to AHS Activities Director Lisa Quednow-Bickler.

Jefferson’s girls basketball team won three state titles and six conference championships while Johnson was there.

“Coach Johnson brings a tremendous amount of Packer pride with him,” Quednow-Bickler said. “He has the background in a winning program and is working to take our girls basketball program to the next level. He brings a great deal of competitiveness and energy and will be a good fit.”

Johnson, who was also involved in football and softball at Jefferson, graduated from AHS in 1976 and Austin Community College in 1980. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1994.

Johnson will meet with parents May 31 at Christgau Hall.

Johnson takes over for Gary Peterson, who recently retired after coaching the Packers for 21 seasons and leading them to two state tournament appearances.
