Manny Taredes, along with his brother Raymond, are opening JNK Friend Chicken today at the Oak Park Mall.

For 20 years, Manny Taredes has been perfecting the fried chicken recipe created by his mother and grandmother. Today, he’s ready to share it with Austin.

Taredes and his brother, Raymond, are opening J&K Fried Chicken in Oak Park Mall today. The restaurant — across from Ole Barn BBQ — will feature a wide menu, including broasted chicken, French fries, Mexican food such as burritos, tacos and enchiladas, and desserts such as ice cream, malts and smoothies.

“We have a lot of people coming in, wondering about the menu,” Taredes said. “My restaurant is totally different. I have an original menu.”

The Mexican food, Taredes said, is authentic and from central Mexico. The chicken, he said, is southern style and a Taredes original.

“Our recipe, it’s some of the best,” he said of the chicken, which comes in three different flavors.

This isn’t Taredes’ first restaurant venture, as he and his brother opened a J&K Fried Chicken in Edina, Minn., eight years ago, which he said is doing very well. Manny, who lives in Austin, and Raymond, who lives in Edina, share responsibilities at both locations.

The Taredes brothers will have two other employees in Austin. J&K will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and will have food court seating outside the restaurant.
