MANKATO — The Austin baseball team picked up its first win of the season when it split a doubleheader at Mankato East (1-1 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) Tuesday.

The Packers (1-3 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) won the first game 7-1 and lost the nightcap 10-4.

Austin junior Marcus Stoulil struck out eight and allowed zero earned runs in seven innings in the opening win, which saw the Packers turn two double plays.

“Marcus did a good job of mixing things up and the defense played well behind him,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said.

Gabe Kasak had a double and an RBI for Austin and freshman Nick Gasner knocked in two runs in the win.

Austin starter Jacob Thompson allowed two unearned runs in two innings before he had to leave the game with shoulder issues in the nightcap.

“We just didn’t make the same plays in the second game as we did in the first one,” Watkins said.
