MnDOT announces $1.1B in 2012 road construction projects

With winter in the rearview mirror, drivers across the state are turning their attention to road construction.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced more than 300 summer road projects on Thursday for $1.1 billion.
The only major Mower County project is a six-mile overlay of Highway 56 from Highway 63 to LeRoy for $1.5 million.
Those driving out of town should watch for delays this summer in certain areas. In Freeborn County, a 3-mile stretch of Highway 13 from Highway 69 to Interstate 90 will be repaved for $2.8 million.
Minor bridge work and crack repairs will be completed throughout Mower County, but minimal traffic effects are expected.
Like last summer, delays are expected on Interstate 35 on the way to the Twin Cities late this summer for preventative maintenance in Rice County for $2.8 million. The work could delay traffic during peak hours and weekends.
Long-term lane closures can also be expected on Highway 14 between Kasson and Byron for a 6-mile concrete rehabilitation from May to July.
Other projects will include work on the Highway 52 Lafayette Bridge in St. Paul and resurfacing portions of Highway 10 between Clear Lake and Big Lake. Projects also include improving safety at railroad crossings and fixing runways at regional airports.
MnDOT Commissioner Tom Sorel says the road work will help the economy by supporting jobs.
“The highway construction industry employs thousands and is a key partner in our efforts to deliver this program,” he said in a news release.
