The GMLOK Bulldogs fought a back-and-forth battle Monday night with Saint Charles but were still unable to get their first win of the season.
The Bulldogs’ Sam Eberle started the game off in the second inning with a lead-off double and then scored on a wild pitch.
However, St. Charles came back in the bottom of the inning with Clint Harguth, who led off with a single and scored on a passed ball.
In the second inning, GMLOK retook the lead with a two-out rally. Trenton Bleifus hit a single; Noah Schlee entered a courtesy run for the catcher, Bleifus, and Lucas Roe followed with a single. Eberle then hit another double to score both runners.
St. Charles hung tight and scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning with Andy Johnston reaching on a passed ball strikeout. Back to back base hits by Cole Small and Harguth then loaded the bases.
Johnston and Small later scored on wild pitches. Josh Nicklay reached on a walk and Reese Glover got an RBI base hit. Derek Ihrke then hit a ground-out RBI, and Nicklay also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
After three innings, St. Charles opened up a 6-3 lead.
The Bulldogs’ Perry Stejskal then led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Doug Sabatke to bring GMLOK within two. Yet St. Charles got a run back with a double by Johnston, who stole third base and scored on the overthrow.
The Saints recorded another run in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off walk to Harguth. Harguth later scored on a defensive error for an 8-4 Saints’ lead. The bulldogs cut into the lead in the sixth inning as Sam Eberle reached base for the third time on a dropped third strike and stolen second. Eberle reached third on an error and scored again on a sac fly by Sabatke. Trevor Gomer pitched a complete game, seven-hit, six-strikeout to take the loss.
“Trevor pitched a good game today, only giving up seven hits,” said GMLOK head coach Taran Jack. “Four of the hits came in the five-run third inning. We just need to get through the one inning that seems to give us trouble every game.”
The bulldogs, 0-8 on the year, will travel to Dover-Eyota for a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.
